Pubic Lice
Humans are the only carriers. Pubic lice are generally found in pubic hair but can also be found on chest and armpit hair. Transmission occurs through direct sexual contact as well as non-sexual contact. Nits or lice clinging to hair can be observed, and symptoms such as itching, erythema, and skin irritation may develop.
Scabies
Scabies primarily occurs through close human contact rather than sexual contact, and causes severe nocturnal itching. As a result of itching, papules or nodules develop around the genitals, and in severe cases, pyoderma (pus skin disease) may occur.
Diagnosis of Pubic Lice & Scabies
Pubic Lice
Diagnosis is based on typical clinical symptoms. Crusts containing larvae can be found on the hair. In cases where definitive diagnosis is difficult, larvae or lice are collected in a container for microscopic examination.
Scabies
Diagnosis is made by scraping the suspected skin to obtain mites or eggs, followed by microscopic examination.
Treatment of Pubic Lice & Scabies
Pubic Lice
Apply Lindane 1% lotion or cream to the affected hair, then wash off after 4 minutes.
Scabies
After drying the skin, apply Lindane 1% lotion or cream to the entire body from the neck to the toes, then wash off after 8 hours.
